My Story
I started my own private tuition business in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. From the beginning, one-to-one teaching was where I felt most at home — it was something my university lecturers had already identified as one of my strengths. Word spread, and before long my weekly timetable was full.
When I moved back to Surrey, where I'd grown up, I had to build things again from scratch. This time the business grew almost entirely through recommendations from parents and students. Over the years I've worked with primary-aged children, GCSE students and adults, often teaching the same students for several years as they progress through school.
English was my degree specialism, while Maths became something I was determined to make as straightforward and non-threatening as possible. A big part of the way I teach is spotting exactly where something has stopped making sense, finding another way of explaining it, and knowing the little traps that repeatedly catch students out.
Since 2020 my tutoring has been entirely online. What initially felt like a big change turned out to suit one-to-one teaching incredibly well. Google Meet, shared documents and interactive whiteboards mean we can work together naturally while removing geography altogether — I now teach students across the UK and beyond.
More than anything, I want lessons to feel relaxed. Students don't need to worry about getting something wrong, admitting they don't understand, or asking me to explain it again. Parents regularly tell me that this informal approach makes a difference not only to results, but to their child's confidence in the subject.
